Ragan Surprises, Sets Pace in Happy Hour as Kurt Busch Crashes Late

David Ragan paced final practice for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. All the quickest times were set early in the session. Ragan ran top 10 times in all three practice sessions and qualified 23rd.

Jimmie Johnson ran the most laps in the session with 95, followed closely by Darrell Wallace Jr.’s 93 laps. Chad Finchum, who will make his Cup Series debut on Sunday, didn’t run a lap in the session.

The only incident in the session occurred with a couple of minutes left in the session, when Kurt Busch spun off of turn two and collided with the inside wall. Busch was near the end of a long run, and had elected to run a couple more laps before he planned to bring it to the garage. The incident would effectively mark the end of the session and will likely send Busch to a backup car. Busch qualified second, but will probably have to start from the back of the field on Sunday.

The Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway is scheduled to go green around 1 p.m. eastern time on Sunday. The race was moved from a 2 p.m. eastern start due to forecasted rain.
