Kyle Busch Beats Brother Kurt to Win Bristol Pole

Kyle Busch won the pole for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. It’s Busch’s 29th career Cup Series pole, second at Bristol, and second of 2018. Kyle’s brother Kurt starts second. This marks the third-ever all-Busch front row.

In the first round, it took about seven minutes for a significant number of car to get out on track. It was another several minutes before any contenders to make a lap. With around five minutes left in the round, contenders started rolling out. This led to a couple of minutes of chaos, and, at the end of it, drivers such as Denny Hamlin (25th), Martin Truex Jr. (26th), Ryan Newman (30th), and Jamie McMurray (31st) were outside of the top 24. Kevin Harvick didn’t make a run because a wreck in practice sent him to a backup car. Because of these issues for the frontrunners, drivers such as Michael McDowell (10th), David Ragan (13th), AJ Allmendinger (15th), and Matt DiBenedetto (24th) made it to the second round. 14.879 seconds was the time to beat, set by Kyle Busch.

In round two, all 24 drivers again sat until three minutes were left before rolling off pit road. At the end of it all, Erik Jones (13th), Clint Bowyer (14th), Chase Elliott (16th), Jimmie Johnson (17th), and Aric Almirola (19th) missed out on their chance to compete for the pole. Johnson had a confrontation with Darrell Wallace Jr. after he got stuck behind Wallace on the track. Johnson wasn’t happy, but deemed it circumstantial. Kurt Busch came away with the fastest time, which was 14.871 seconds.

Again in round three, a car didn’t pull onto the track until only about 90 seconds remained in the round. After that hectic minute and a half, Kyle Busch topped the board, with brother Kurt in second. Kyle ran a lap in 14.895 seconds compared to Kurt’s 14.897 second lap.

On Saturday, the Cup Series has two more practice sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. eastern time. The Food City 500 takes place at 2 p.m. eastern on Sunday.
