Kurt Busch Wins Texas Pole in Rain-Shortened Qualifying

Kurt Busch won the pole for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Busch ran a time of 27.360 seconds around the 1.5 mile track. He was followed by his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer. This marks the first-ever 1-2-3 start for Stewart-Haas Racing, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2018. Qualifying was called after only one round after lightning entered the vicinity of the speedway.

Early on, Chris Buescher hit the wall exiting turn four. Buescher came back to the pits, his team repaired his car and got approval to get two new right side tires. He ran a lap and was able to place 18th, even with a damaged car. Notables that missed out on making the top 24 included Ryan Newman (25th), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (26th), and William Byron (33rd). Byron had to make an engine change on Friday and will have to start from the rear of the field on Sunday anyway. Reed Sorenson did not post a lap.

Before the second round was able to start, qualifying was put on hold due to lightning in the area. This lightning and expected rain and storms later on would lead to NASCAR cancelling the other two rounds of qualifying, meaning the field would be set by round one speeds.

There will be two more practices at 11 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. eastern time on Saturday. The O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 will take place at 2 P.M. eastern on Sunday.
